The last stretch climbs into the hills of the Ardennes on smaller roads. Allow extra time if you travel during the morning or evening rush around Brussels and Liège. In winter, snow or fog on the higher ground can also slow the final part of the trip.

About Stavelot

Stavelot is a small town in the Liège province of Wallonia, set in the valley of the river Amblève. It grew around its Benedictine abbey, and the former abbey buildings now house several museums. The town is also known for its Laetare carnival, where the white-clad Blancs-Moussis parade through the streets. Many visitors come for walks in the Ardennes and the High Fens, or to visit the Spa-Francorchamps race circuit nearby.

Hôtel d'Orange is a long-established hotel in the centre of Stavelot, close to the abbey. If you prefer more choice, the nearby town of Spa has well-known hotels. These include the Radisson Blu Palace Hotel and Hotel Balmoral. Spa is a short drive from Stavelot, so it works well as a base for both places. Book early if you plan to visit during a race weekend or the carnival.
