The Drive to Den Helder

The transfer covers 282 km (176 miles) and typically takes 3 h 13 m. The road leads north out of Belgium, across the Dutch border and up the North Holland peninsula to its northern tip. This is one of our less frequently booked routes, but it is available on request like any other.

On a journey of over three hours, traffic matters. Morning and evening rush hours around the large cities on the way can add time, and so can busy holiday weekends. If you have a ferry, a meeting or a check-in slot at the other end, build in a comfortable buffer rather than planning to the minute.

On a three-hour ride, extra space makes the trip noticeably more comfortable. If you are close to the limit of a vehicle, it is usually better to choose the next size up.

About Den Helder

Den Helder lies at the northern tip of North Holland, where the North Sea meets the Wadden Sea. It is best known as the main base of the Royal Netherlands Navy, and it has a maritime character, with a harbour, a naval museum and long beaches nearby. The town is also the mainland starting point for the ferry to the island of Texel, so many visitors pass through on their way there.
