The drive from Zaventem to Breendonk

Breendonk lies 27 km (17 miles) from Brussels Zaventem Airport, and the drive usually takes about 22 minutes. The route heads west and north-west across the Flemish countryside between Brussels and Antwerp, so it is a straightforward trip by road. Breendonk is not one of our most frequently booked destinations, but it is available on request like every other route. Allow extra time if you travel during the morning or evening rush hour, when the roads around Brussels get busy, or if you have a tight connection or appointment at the other end.

Breendonk as a destination

Breendonk is a small village in the province of Antwerp, in the municipality of Puurs-Sint-Amands, roughly midway between Brussels and Antwerp. It is best known for Fort Breendonk, a former fortress that the German occupiers used as a prison camp during the Second World War. Today it is preserved as a memorial and museum, and it draws visitors, school groups and history enthusiasts from Belgium and abroad. Apart from the fort, the area is quiet and rural, with fields, canals and nearby towns such as Willebroek and Mechelen within easy reach. A pre-booked private transfer is a practical way to get here, as the village is not directly on the airport’s main routes.
