Brussels Zaventem Airport (BRU) to Bellem

The drive from Brussels Airport to Bellem

The route covers 81 km (50 miles) and typically takes about 55 minutes. It leads northwest from Zaventem across Flanders towards the area between Ghent and Bruges. Bellem is booked less often than the big city routes, but it is available on request like any other destination. Brussels' ring road is busy at weekday rush hours, so allow some extra time if you are travelling to a fixed appointment or a wedding or event nearby.

Choosing the right vehicle

For solo travellers, couples and small families, a private taxi is the simplest option: one version takes up to 3 passengers, another up to 4. Larger parties can choose a private minibus with 8, 16, 24, 32, 40 or 48 seats. This helps with groups attending a wedding, a company visit or a family reunion, since everyone arrives together and with their luggage. When you book, count suitcases as well as people and pick the size that leaves comfortable room for both.

Bellem and where to stay

Bellem is a small village in the municipality of Aalter in East Flanders, in quiet, flat countryside between Ghent and Bruges. It is a calm base rather than a sightseeing hub, and visitors often combine it with day trips to the two nearby historic cities. I cannot name established hotels in Bellem itself with confidence, so here are well-known options in nearby Ghent, the larger city to the east:

• Sofitel Gent Belfry & Spire, in the historic centre next to the belfry
• NH Gent Belfort, a centrally located hotel close to the main sights
• Hotel Gravensteen, set in a converted mansion near the Count's Castle
