About Bruges

Bruges is one of the most beautiful, ethereal-looking places in Europe. One of the biggest attractions in Bruges are the canal tours where you can enjoy the glorious medieval architectural pieces. There are so many interesting spots to visit in this small, but magical city that you won’t be able to help it, but fall in love with it. Some people refer to this city as the Venice in Northern Europe. The city's unique medieval charm will indeed leave you breathless because it is one of the rarest magical-looking places in Western Europe.

Top Places to Visit

If you are visiting Bruges, we recommend going to Rozenhoedkaai, no matter if it’s summer or winter season. This is a beautiful place where you can take many stunning photographs. From the Rozenhoedkaai area, you will be able to enjoy Bruges' timeless scenery.

As we have previously mentioned, the canals in this city are a must-see. Cruis-ing around, you will discover countless secret places and beautiful, mystic gardens, bridges and unique architecture. The best way to feel the charm of this lovely Belgian city is to go cruising through its canals.

The art center Art O Nivo is another popular spot for people that enjoy good art. It is located just above Callebert, a well-known design shop. This center is a perfectly hidden gem that is hard to find. Visit this place to enjoy ceramics, glasswork, graphic and design art.

Art 14 is another contemporary gallery where you will be able to see some out-standing craftsmanship. It is nearby Groeninge Museum. Just next to this gal-lery, you will see the famous "Church of Our Lady." Another gallery that we recommend is Koen Broes, owned by Carine and Koen Broes, both specializ-ing in paper works and graphic arts. Some of the most extraordinary prints can be found in this lovely contemporary art gallery, so do pay a visit if you are nearby.

If you are staying in Bruges, we recommend Flanders Fields. If you go for a day trip to probably the most beautiful part from West Flander, then you should definitely check out Flandr Fields. You can visit Chocolate World and learn everything about Belgian chocolates, as well as the famous historical village known as Damme. You can also take one of the tours and visit the battlefields of World War One.

Visiting Boudewijn Sea Park is another great option for tourists, especially for people that travel with their family. This theme park has a dolphinarium, which can be as much fun for adults as it is for kids. There is also a restaurant nearby with a beautiful seaside view, if you wish to stop for some time and have a cup of coffee or a nice lunch.

If you have some spare time while you are in Bruges, you can also visit the sea-side and the nature reserve called Het Zwin. This place has some of the most beautiful beaches in Belgium. There are many shops and restaurants in this area, too, so you can have a nice day away from the city and enjoy seaside promenades.

De Halve Maan is one of the oldest city breweries. It has been opened back in 1564 and used to be owned by a famous family known as Maes. The family's latest brew was the winner of a gold medal back in 2006, at the World Beer Cup. You can take a tour around the brewery and the museum, too.

When in Bruges, don’t miss one of the most beautiful sculptures created by Michelangelo, one of the greatest sculptors ever. It is permanently displayed at a chapel in the "Our Lady's Church." This amazing sculpture is the first one that was relocated from Italy. The initial plan was for the sculpture to be placed in the cathedral Sienna. However, two merchants residing in Bruges took it back in their hometown in 1506. This is one of the most beautiful churches and sculptures in Belgium, so adding it to your sightseeing list is totally worth it.

Nature

If you love spending time in nature, go to Minnewater Lake and enjoy beautiful green scenery. Regardless of the season, this place will let you enjoy a peaceful walk or even a nice picnic time.

Bruges Art Route is the second favorite place of nature lovers and people that want to get away from the city for a bit. There is a bike path along the canal that lets you explore the place and see some beautiful old Windmills.

Koningin Astridpark is a gorgeous neighborhood park that you could use for a quick getaway from the city hustle. Whether you want to relax sitting in the grass or visit some of the many bars or restaurants, this is the place to go.

Architecture

Another must-see is the Beguinage. It’s a wonderful place where you can find a lot of houses founded back in 1245. The Flanders' countess is the founder of this place. It used to be the home of all members during the movement of Beguine which was a mystical religion that was quite popular during the 1200's.

These days, there is one Benedictine monastery there which looks quite serene and beautiful.

Rowleg is another place that is worth visiting. The architectural buildings are fascinating! They haven't been changed at all, not even centuries later. This used to be the home of Guido Gezelle, a famous poet who lived from1830 to 1899. While in the area, you can visit the famous museum for folklore, where you can see all the historic settings recreated, for example, living rooms, a workshop for cobblers, apothecary, an inn, etc.

Bruges is also quite known for the famous Chocolateries all around the city. While you are strolling down the beautiful small cobbled streets of Bruges, we suggest you enter some of the best chocolate shops in Europe. Stop to enjoy some of the most delicious chocolate sweets in all Europe. Some of the most famous chocolate houses in Belgium are Pierre Marcollini, Dolfin, Neuhaus, Godiva, Leonidas, etc. Our pick - try the famous dark cocoa truffles or the deli-cious dark fruit chocolate by Neuhaus - you won’t regret it!

Groenerei is another beautiful location where you can enjoy Bruges' medieval scenery. From this spot, you will be able to see all the old medieval bridges and enjoy the uniqueness of medieval architecture. While you are in Bruges, we also recommend paying a visit to some of the best galleries in the city. One of them is Absolute Art. This gallery is located in the center of the city and has been one of the best Belgian galleries for more than ten years. Here, you can enjoy contemporary art, sculptures, paintings, and photographs from Belgian artists as well as international painters. Art lovers – this is a must-see for you!

Also, there are a lot of entertaining events happening throughout the entire year. If you want to go out and have some fun you can attend a cool concert or an art exhibition. While enjoying your stay in Bruges, you might as well want to try the famous Belgian fries which are probably another delicious delicacy which is always connected to the Belgian food culture.

If you are up to see something more spectacular, pay a visit to the Royal City Theatre of Bruges. It was built back in 1869. It represents a very well preserved building that was recently restored and looks exactly like it used to back in the days. Here you can enjoy some contemporary dance, concerts and of course, theatre plays.

Food & Drinks

When it comes to food, Bruges has the potential to satisfy every taste. If you are into a cool quirky-looking restaurant, you have tons to choose from! There are also brasseries and bistros where you can enjoy a casual night out and try something traditional. Bruges has a lot of cafes and bars where you can go for a drink and a quick snack in a lovely atmosphere.

If you want to spend your evening in a lovely atmosphere and just relax, have in mind that Bruges is the city where you can enjoy some of the best Belgian beers and traditional food. There are many great restaurants in this charming little town that prepare surprisingly tasty food.

The restaurant Au Petit Grand is one of the most elegant and relaxed restau-rants where you can try excellent food. It is located near the centre of the city, and it is open until 12 am. There are a lot of interesting sea-food and grilled meat dishes that you can try. The atmosphere is quite comfortable, and the food is just fantastic, so if you want to spend some quality time in an intimate atmosphere, we strongly recommend Au Petit Grand.

The bar/restaurant B-IN is a very popular spot in Bruges. You can enjoy an ex-cellent evening with fantastic music, food and drinks in a casual and fun at-mosphere. There is also a waterfront terrace which is open if the weather is good. The historic charm of the city actually meets the modern era in this fan-tastic place. If you are up to having a good time during the night, you have to visit this awesome bar at least once.

Another place that we strongly recommend is the beer brasserie known as Cambrings. There are more than four hundred beers that you can choose from, as well as some dishes which are beer-inspired and very delicious! The interior is traditional, and the prices are affordable. A great place to have a few drinks and taste real good food.

Perhaps one of the coolest places to visit is the lounge bar Barazar, where you can have a delicious cocktail. It is a modern and intimate bar that is quite popu-lar among the locals and tourists, too. There is a great terrace where you can sit, and usually, there is blues playing in the background. It is located in the center of Bruges. During the winter days, you can see the fireplace burning and feel the warmth in Barazar. The staff is very friendly, and they will be more than happy to serve some of their best drinks.

The tapas bar Cookie's is locals’ favorite meeting place. It is located in the tini-est street in the city. The ambience in this bar will make you feel like you are back in the times of jazz and blues. If you go there, do not miss the opportunity to try delicious tapas, made with Italian, Belgian and Spanish products. They also have some amazing wines and beers.

De Nisse is a very popular restaurant in Bruges, located in the city center. It is surrounded by fantastic buildings. This restaurant dates back from 16th centu-ry. It literally dominates the entire street view and if you want to experience one of the oldest places in Bruges, this is the place to go. There are always sea-sonal suggestions on the menu that you can choose from. They also have a fondue menu.

De Vlaamsche Pot is one of the best traditional restaurants in Bruges. If you are up to trying some of the most delicious Flemish dishes, as well as hearty stews, chips, and mussels, you might want to pay a visit to this place. The ambience is quite cozy, and the food is super delicious. There are all kinds of pancakes and waffles which are served during the afternoon.

Our last, but not the least recommendation is the bistro called Pro Deo. It is a small, but very cozy restaurant that is situated on the opposite side of the courthouse of Bruges. If you want to have an intimate dinner with some jazz in the background while trying some delicious pasta or seafood dishes, visit Pro Deo.
